Palermo chief prosecutor Maurizio de Lucia stated that the mafia is showing growing interest in modern weapons that have ended up in illegal circulation. Italian law enforcement has already discovered a batch of weapons that entered the country from the Balkans.
De Lucia also reported that the investigation has evidence of attempts to purchase ammunition intended for dropping from drones. He noted that the existing protection system is not yet sufficiently prepared for such threats.
The prosecutor's office assesses that criminal groups are seeking to build a high-tech arsenal not only in Palermo but also in other regions of Italy.
