At that point, the body had not yet begun to decompose and Sybil Ammons, a 68-year-old nurse who has spent 30 years as the coroner for rural Stewart County, Georgia, had not yet urgently requested that it be taken away. Around 3 p.m. on May 11, the first message from Ammons arrived, short and to the point. She would not release information about the case of Cuban national Denny Adán González unless the family consented. The family agreed, but two days later Ammons still had no final finding on the incident: “I’m working on it. I hope to have an answer today,” she says, hurriedly, like someone who saves her patience for the dead.
